I tried these Mavea water filters a an alternative to the much more expensive replacement filters that I usually buy for my PUR 18 cup water dispenser. Overall, I could not tell any difference in water quality between the two, other than the lack of initial carbon deposits left by the Mavea filters. Here is a summary of my findings.PROS* Mavea cost much less than PUR replacement filters, especially when bought on amazon.* No soaking! You do not need to soak these filters, unlike the ones from PUR. They work right out of the box.* No messy carbon deposits. Most of the time I install a new PUR filter, I have to throw-out the first pitcher of filtered water because there are so many little pieces of carbon floating around in it. No such problem with the Mavea filters.* Taste. Water tastes the same, if not better, than when using the original PUR replacement filters. If I did a blind taste test, I would most likely not be able to pick which was which. PUR filters did a great job. They work just as well.* Lifespan. The Mavea filters seem to last slightly longer than the PUR filters before becoming less effective. It is difficult to measure, but I would guess that they last about 10% longer than the original PUR filters do.CONS* This is not even so much of a "con" as an observation. The Mavea filters fit differently that the original PUR filters. It is more of a friction fit than an interlocking fit. However, NO water leaks through the seal to avoid being filtered, so the design 100% works. It just works differently.As you can tell, there seem to be an awful lot of PROS in favor of the Mavea water filters and no real CONS to speak of. This is going to be a product that I will repeatedly purchase in the future based upon not only its price but its quality. I honestly can't think of any reason to switch back to using PUR replacement filters in the future. PUR filters are not bad by comparison. Unless they are actually better, there is no reason to spend more money on them though.
